DURLEIGH SAILING CENTRE RC SAILING MEETING AND SCORING RULES 2024

Applies to all classes of yacht competitions and trophy meetings hosted by DSC RC Section exclusively for DSC RC members.

1. Meetings
  1. Officer Of The Day (OOD); Will normally be the appropriate Yacht Section Secretary but he/she may designate the duty to another club member as appropriate. The OOD for the event will decide the running order for all entrants and the race course layout. At the start of the meeting the OOD shall call a Skippers Briefing outlining the sailing instructions.
  2. All entrants must adhere to the sailing instructions given during the Skippers Briefing.
  3. The normal race times for afternoon events will be 14.30 with the last race not starting after 17.00 however, this may be amended by the
  4. OOD for that event at any point during the event.
  5. The normal race times for morning and all day events will be 10.00.
  6. The number of yachts racing in a single fleet at any one time shall not exceed 15.
  7. Race Observer (RO); Each competing entrant will act as an RO. The number and frequency of RO duties will be decided by that meetings OOD.
  8. The designated OOD for the event, may abandon the event at any point should they deem it appropriate due to conditions, exceptional circumstance or emergency. Once abandoned the event will not be rescheduled.
  9. Any event shall be declared void if less than 4 races have taken place. If 4 or more races have taken place the event shall be scored as detailed in section 3.
2 Scoring for round/meeting.
  1. Score per race – 1pt for first place and an additional point for each subsequent position (ie; 1st = 1pts, 2nd = 2, 3rd = 3, etc)
  2. Discard system – 1 discard for every 4th race completed (ie; 9 races = 2 discards, 12 = 3)
  3. Tied scores (countback) – places will be separated by using the countback system. The highest finishing places between those involved will be compared with the person with the most 1st places being placed higher, if this should tie then compare 2nd place, then 3rd etc. If all finishing places tie those concerned will be given equal place/points.
  4. Did Not Start (DNS), Did not Finish (DNF), DSQ (Disqualified) from a race or Retired (RTD) from the event. Should someone fail to finish a race or not start they will score as last place plus 1 point for that race. (ie; if a race should have started with 15 boats, then any DNS, DNF, DSQ or RTD will score 16 points for that race).
  5. Where a skippers race result is adversely affected by any event that is not of their own fault, they are expected to accept the result and take it as one of their discards under 2.2.
  6. One day events/trophy meetings. Places will be decided using the scoring system above. For these events there may be a small entry fee charged to cover the cost of prizes for that event. Please note: Discards only count for the races completed by each entrant, which will not always be the total number of races run.
3 Overall scoring (for multiple meetings or a series)
  1. Points score for each meeting/round; every finishing place will be scored as follows;
    • 1st place ‚ 25 points
    • 2nd ‚ 24
    • 3rd ‚ 23
    • 4th ‚ 22
    • 5th ‚ 21
    • and so on down to 1 point for 25th place and all places thereafter.
    If a person does not attend a meeting/round they score 0 points.
  2. Discards for overall scoring, the number of discards for a series of events is as follows;
    • 1 to 3 rounds ‚ 0 discards
    • 4 to 6 rounds ‚ 1 discard
    • 7 to 9 rounds ‚ 2 discards
    • 10 or above ‚ 3 discards
  3. In the event that a series does not complete, or exceed, 50% of the rounds scheduled on the calendar, at the commencement date of the series, then the entire series shall be declared void and no series win awarded.
  4. Overall places/points ‚all finishing places in the overall series are decided by the highest total points scored after any discard(s). Any tied scored are separated by using the countback system (same as rule 2.3) excluding any discard(s) rounds. If the countback system also produces a tie, then the entrant with the highest discard(s) total score will be placed higher. If this should also tie, those concerned will be awarded equal places.
4 Cancelled or postponed meeting/round
  1. Only the Yacht Section Secretary, Club Secretary or designated event OOD may cancel or postpone a meeting/round before its commencement if he/she deems it necessary. This may be due to adverse weather conditions such as a frozen lake, for safety reasons or any other event outside their control. If this happens at short notice every effort will be made to inform all those who were expected to be entering that event.
  2. The Yacht Section Secretary may reschedule any postponed day event. A maximum of one round can/may be rescheduled in any one series.
